Mascioni & Behrmann led the architectural and engineering team and design of this new walk-in acute care clinic for EmblemHealth and AdvantageCare Physicians. Our task was to design a more welcoming outpatient facility reflecting a strong connection to the downtown Manhattan community.
Our team chose a contemporary aesthetic that could coexist with the character of the existing building. We kept the existing Corinthian-style steel columns, refinishing them in a dark grey. Surrounding spaces took on a contrasting, more contemporary look with a palette of white and muted warm colors. We also paid homage to the building’s history with a brick veneer in the waiting area.
To maintain the welcoming atmosphere, we kept the ceilings of common areas open, with light fixtures that doubled as sculptures. The high ceilings of those spaces and two new multipurpose rooms were designed to contrast with the patient care area, where closed ceilings protected patients’ privacy. By creating this juxtaposition, we made the overall facility feel larger and more open to both patients and staff.
